Leith Community Growers
Leith Community Growers was created as a community response to the first Covid-19 lockdown, with the initial aim of developing community growing opportunities in Leith to tackle social isolation. Since then, our mission has expanded to address the pressing environmental challenges, including climate anxiety, recognising that community resilience is key to combating the climate crisis. We’ve established regular growing sessions, community meals, and partnerships to develop local growing projects, all while hosting community festivals and workshops on topics like breadmaking, permaculture, and orchard management.
- We aim to create an inclusive community in Leith, welcoming all regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, or other identifying factors, with particular focus on under-represented groups such as People of Colour, ethnic minorities, and those for whom English is an additional language.
- We operate a non hierarchical structure. Our consensus decision-making process and radically inclusive approach ensure that all voices are heard, and we actively work to remove barriers to participation by providing free access to materials and encouraging mutual support through events like community meals, seed swapping, and resource-sharing workshops
- All our projects are rooted in local needs and our strong commitment to climate, social, and food justice, as well as equality.
- We believe that everyone should have access to the resources needed to grow their own food.
- We aim to support and enable community-based projects to make locally grown produce and welcoming community spaces available to all.
- Leith Community Growers are committed to fighting social isolation, improving mental health and well-being, and building community resilience.
