Illinois Science Council
Illinois Science Council ("ISC") is an independent 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to engage, educate, and entertain the adult public about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). We showcase the scientists and research of the Chicago-area institutions and companies that make Chicago our nation's true "City of Science." ISC serves as the adult complement to the widespread K-12 student-focused programs. And we serve as the science & tech complement to the region's arts & culture offerings by offering live public programs at low or no cost.
Carl Sagan observed, "We live in a society that is exquisitely dependent upon science and technology in which hardly anyone understands anything about science and technology." ISC is working hard to change that.
ISC explores all areas of science and technology with a fun, non-stuffy approach. We don't care what we've forgotten since school (or never learned in the first place). It's simply about continuing to exercise our inexhaustible human sense of curiosity. ISC's engaging programs include:
- Author talks, e.g., Mary Roach, Stephen Pinker, James Hamblin, Lisa Randall, Randall Munroe, Jennifer Ouellette, Michio Kaku;
- Film screenings with discussions, e.g., "The Believers," "The Atom Smashers," "I Believe in Dinosaurs," "JAWS";
- Topical talks, e.g., Science of Cooking, Your Brain on Happiness, The Brain on Addiction, Human Genome & Consumer Genetic Tests, Disappearing Bees, Tour of Argonne Lab); and,
- Experiential hands-on chemistry, e.g., Chemistry of... Beer, Chocolate, Whiskey, Coffee, Honey, Bread, etc.
- Chicago Science Festival
