VSS 3 - Seminar: Rubén González-Cuerva, "There and Back Again: The Reintegration of Dowager Empress Maria of Austria in the Spanish Court"

About this event

Organized by the European branch of the Society for the Court Studies, the third event of the Virtual Scholarship Series features Rubén González-Cuerva from the Institute of History-CSIC, Madrid. Dr González-Cuerva's seminar will focus on "There and Back Again: The Reintegration of Dowager Empress Maria of Austria in the Spanish Court (1582-1598)".

Presentation Abstract:

After three decades of marriage, Empress Maria (1528-1603) became a widow in 1576 and remained depressed and isolated at the imperial court of Prague. Her destiny was to act as female head of the court until her son Emperor Rudolf II (1576-1612) got married, but she tenaciously imposed her will and returned to her native Madrid in 1582, close to her brother King Philip II. As the only early modern Dowager Empress reintegrating in her court of origin, her case arose several concerns: how to adapt local protocol for an individual of superior ranking? How to integrate an imperial household in Madrid? And, despite she assured that she would retire from mundane affairs, how to deal with the interests of the royal sister and her patronage networks? Maria’s example tests the flexibility of the Habsburgs and the room of manoeuvre of female dynastic figures in a new courtier environment. Did she become a new Catherine of Medici –as Venetian ambassadors feared– or a retired nun?

The seminar will be held via Zoom. All registrants will received the Zoom link via Eventbrite on the day of the seminar.
