About this event

Who should attend the seminar?

The Topsoe SAF summit aims to unite key SAF decision-makers and stakeholders in a discussion surrounding the latest SAF-related updates and developments. Note that this is an invitation-only event.

What is the program of the seminar?

The summit is kicked off with a Welcoming Tapas Sunday 26th November. Monday and Tuesday there will be presentations and discussions. The seminar will end at noon on Tuesday 28th November.

What does the summit cover?

The following topics will be addressed:

1. What is SAF from a regulatory perspective? (Sylvain Verdier and Mathias Bøje Madsen, Topsoe) What are the current SAF mandates and incentives? Is SAF the same thing in EU, US, UK or in the rest of the world? Who has obligations to produce or use SAF? Can SAF be produced anywhere in the world? Which feedstocks can be used to produce aviation biofuels and e-jet?

2. Market outlook (Oskar Meijerink, Head of Future Fuels, SkyNRG) How much SAF will we need and when? Which technologies are likely to be deployed at large scale quickly? What are the main bottlenecks to faster deployment? Which regions will use and produce SAF? Any disruptive technology on the way?

3. Panel discussion: How can a SAF project reach final investment decision? Bruce Fleming, CEO (Montana Renewables/Calumet), Harald Hecking, Head of Innovation (Uniper), Hannes Kofler, Managing Director (J.P. Morgan), Daniel Bloch, SAF specialist (IATA) Let us listen to our panelists elaborate about risk management over the SAF supply chain and the influence on financing to reach FID (feed, technology, offtake, regulations, disruptions)

4. Panel discussion: What is a sustainable feedstock to produce SAF? Bruce Fleming, CEO (Montana Renewables), Bastien Le Bouhellec, Head of Biodiesel Trading Desk (Groupe Avril), Thomas Björklöf, Head of Biofuels Technology (Varo Energy) A discussion about the feedstocks challenges to produce aviation biofuels and eSAF: supply, price, demand, logistics, risk of fraud and certification.

5. Deep dive into current and future SAF technologies (Mathias Bøje Madsen and Gabriel Antberg, Topsoe) A detailed technical overview of the technologies, feedstocks, TRL levels, GHG savings of current and future SAF pathways.

6. GE Aerospace’s roadmap for the future of flight (Roman Seele, Engineering Leader (GE Aerospace))

• Rising to the challenge of reducing aviation emissions with one of the most extensive technology roadmaps in company history

• Developing disruptive technologies for next-generation aircraft engines, including hybrid electric systems and new engine architectures like open fan

• Extensive engines testing to support Sustainable Aviation Fuel qualification

7. Panel: Airports of tomorrow - which infrastructure will be needed? Jesper Jacobsen (Head of Sustainability, Copenhagen Airport), Sune Petersen (Head of Sustainability and Strategy, DCC & Shell Aviation). Let us discuss the challenges to prepare airports for tomorrow’s new fuels and energy carriers (SAF, H2, electricity) and which infrastructures need to be developed inside and outside airports.

8. Panel discussion: Sustainability, LCA and certification of aviation fuels Tom Berg, Policy and Sustainability Manager (SkyNRG), Matthieu Boisson, CEO (CertifHy), Jannick Schmidt, CTO (2.-0 LCA consultants) How is LCA of SAF conducted? What are the requirements in different regions? What are the challenges? Will legislators add more LCA parameters to regulations?

9. Panel discussion: Non-CO2 effects, the new kid on the block? Dr. Ulrike Burkhardt, Research Scientist (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, German Aerospace Center DLR), Rocio Gonzalez (Policy Manager, Zero-Carbon Fuels and Transportation Decarbonization, Clean Air Task Force) Non-CO2 effects - What are they? What do we know? Can they be minimized?

10. Panel discussion: Clearing the runway for SAF – what is the role of policy? Laurent Donceel, Senior Policy Director (Airlines for Europe), Charlotte Lollar, Mishal Almutlaq, CIO (Alfanar), Stine Sandermann Justesen, Team Leader for Renewable Fuels (Danish Energy Agency) How can policy enable the deployment of SAF at large scale? What are the pros and cons of the various policy approaches? And who should pay?
