🚀 THE TALK 🚀
The escalation of different global crises such as racism, mental health, poverty – to name a few – are all compounded effects emerging by the current climate crisis and global pandemic, shaping and undermining our governmental systems and exacerbating the level of trust in our institutions. It is in this arena that the role of design could position itself as a way to address these issues at a more intrinsic level. Considering how modern design practises might have triggered those crises in the first place, education plays a key role in this context as a medium to shape new generations of thinkers that can challenge existing paradigms towards the exploration of alternative values and beliefs. It is in this regard that the concept of Speculative and Critical design emerges as a criticism of both the traditional design practice as well as a way to challenge conventional values.
This talk undertakes the value of Critical and Speculative design within the context of a learning experiment conducted by Bespoke, a strategic foresight company based in Copenhagen. In collaboration with Climate-KIC, this Speculative object-oriented learning experiment was conducted together with different students from the Design and Makers course in Vallekilde Højskole, and it aimed at answering an initial question: “How might we learn from COVID-19 to tackle climate-related issues? ”. This 3-days learning experiment encouraged critical reflections and thought-provoking questions that could be shaped into tangible outcomes to give the subject a more material counterpart. This 3-month #learningexperiment constructed upon the results of a 3-day workshop, consists of hands-on activities and experimentations. It functions as a social activity enhancing the effect of peer-based learning as a means to co-speculate with people and rediscuss our values and beliefs.
