Short video invitation to this workshop.

In today’s rapidly changing and complex environments, leadership must evolve from individual command to collective capacity. This workshop brings together board members and leaders across sectors to explore how distributed leadership and social learning generate sustainable, real-world value.

Why This Matters:

Traditional leadership approaches often rely too heavily on top-down decision-making, which limits the innovation and ownership needed in today’s complex contexts. By distributing leadership and cultivating a learning culture, organisations can become more responsive, resilient and inclusive. This workshop helps shift leadership from a position held by one to a capacity shared by many, energising the whole system for change.

Our Approach:

This retreat is built on a foundation of dialogue, co-design and action-oriented learning. Throughout the experience, participants will engage with methods like the Flow Game for peer coaching and personal clarity; Open Space Technology and World Café for collective sense-making; Design for Wiser Action to plan change initiatives; and Backcasting to turn long-term vision into near-term strategy. Leadership Groups support the distribution of ownership and ensure sustained application beyond the retreat.

What You’ll Experience:

Through a blend of personal reflection, case-based learning and hands-on practices, you’ll engage in the kinds of conversations and experiments that build trust, sharpen insight and activate collaboration across silos and hierarchies. You will:

  • Design and steward value-creating social learning spaces
  • Practice multi-directional leadership
  • Build peer-led leadership groups like Critical Friends and Agenda Activists
  • Learn methods for generative dialogue, strategic foresight and co-creation

This is not just about improving leadership, it’s about reshaping how leadership happens and who gets to lead.

Who is this for:

This retreat is designed for:

  • Board members and trustees
  • Senior and mid-level managers leading learning and innovation
  • Network leaders, facilitators and consultants
  • Leaders in public institutions, nonprofits and cross-sector collaborations

You’ll find this valuable if you want to:

  • Share leadership in ways that build trust and ownership across roles and organisations
  • Activate learning as a driver of collaboration and innovation
  • Cultivate distributed leadership practices that include diverse voices and contexts
  • Move beyond hierarchy to co-author strategy, culture and direction

Key outcomes:

You will leave with:

  • Experience with distributed learning leadership structures
  • Practical tools and frameworks for social learning and participatory leadership
  • A richer understanding of multi-directional leadership and how to activate it
  • A personal Action Plan for applying workshop insights
  • Access to post-workshop support, including a peer learning network and optional coaching
