Allyship - the practice of taking the minorities' struggle on as one's own.

An individual from an underinvested community or group cannot easily cast away the weight of their identity (or identities) shaped through bias, discrimination, or even oppression, on a whim. They carry that weight every single day, for better or for worse. An ally understands that this is a weight that they, too, must be willing to carry. And never put down.

But what does that actually mean?

In our next online D&I Lab talk, our CEO Helene Aagaard will sit down with Thandi Dyani to discuss the concept of allyship and how we can use it as a proactive tool in our effort to create a more inclusive and just working environment, but also society as a whole.

Thandi Dyani is passionate about building communities, connecting people and organisations to solve the most wicked challenges facing our societies. She believes in radical collaboration, responsible leadership, equity and equality.

Thandi always focused on development issues, gender equality, Diversity, Equity and Belonging, enabling social entrepreneurship and ecosystems, connecting dots, people and ideas. Before becoming an independent advisor and consultant she was Strategic Partnerships lead at the startup Girls Are Awesome, and former CEO of Impact Hub Johannesburg.

She has designed and facilitated Equity Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for organizations such as B Lab, SAP Next gen, UN Women and BMW Foundation with a focus on gender and racial equity, and she creates concepts with a D&I lens for corporates, NGOs and startups. In other words, she knows allyship in both a societal and business context.
